Assistant Professor of Sociology
Research Fellow/Scientist, SSRC
Ph.D., Environmental Demography, University of Wisconsin-Madison
Guangqing Chi's program of research is focused on the sociology of transportation, population-environment interactions, and small-area population estimation and forecasting. The three areas of research build upon his methodological strengths in spatial analysis and statistics, including exploratory spatial data analysis, spatial econometric modeling, cluster analysis, hierarchical linear modeling, and geostatistics.
Chi's previous research has examined highway-demographic dynamics, transportation impacts on ecological capacity and land use planning, and migratory effects of natural amenities. In 2007, he received the Walter E. Terrie Award from the Southern Demographic Association for his development of spatial regression models for small-area population forecasting.
Currently, Chi applies spatial analysis and statistical techniques to study the role that gasoline costs play in affecting commuting behaviors, residential relocation, traffic levels, and crash rates. Chi also studies the extent to which transportation infrastructure and lack of transportation tools affect racial segregation.
