Kimberly Kelly's research focuses on the sociology of gender, particularly reproductive politics and abortion activism. Dr. Kelly's work centers upon the crisis pregnancy center movement, an evangelical, pro-life/anti-abortion movement dominated by women activists. She also studies the American welfare state as a site of reproductive control and women's resistance to this control.

Her secondary area of research concentrates on gender inequality in occupations, specifically higher education. Dr. Kelly uses both qualitative and quantitative methods in her work, although she works primarily with qualitative approaches, including ethnography and interviewing.

Dr. Kelly's teaching interests lie primarily within the sociology of gender and intersect with several interrelated areas of sociology, including stratification, poverty, work and occupations, and theory.
