Dr. Melinda Pilkinton earned a Ph.D. in social work from Jackson State University in 2007. She has the MSW degree from University of Southern Mississippi and a Bachelor's of Arts in Social Work from Mississippi State University. Dr. Pilkinton is a Licensed Certified Social Worker and a member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers. She is a Mississippi native and resides in Lowndes County.
Dr. Pilkinton has a varied work history in social work. Most recently, she was the Clinical Coordinator for Psychiatric and Chemical Dependency Services at Baptist Behavioral Health Care - Willowbrook in Columbus, Mississippi & continues to serve military personnel and their families in a small outpatient practice there. She also worked at Community Counseling Services (Region VII, Mississippi) as the Children's Coordinator. Before moving back to Mississippi in 1993, she was a school social worker and an outpatient clinical social worker at a parish mental health center in Louisiana.
In 2006, Dr. Pilkinton was appointed by Gov. Haley Barbour to serve on the Mississippi Board of Examiners for Social Workers and Marriage and Family Therapists. She also is a member of the Association of Social Work Board's Examination Research Committee. She is a member of the Council on Social Work Education, Baccalaureate Program Directors, and National Association of Social Workers.
Dr. Pilkinton's research interests are substance abuse, military families, and women's issues.
