African-American Studies/Sociology
Assistant Professor. The African American Studies Program at Mississippi State University invites applications for a tenure-track position beginning August 16, 2008. The position is a joint appointment with the department of Political Science, the department of English, or the department of Sociology, Anthropology and Social Work, depending on the candidate’s area of expertise. The successful candidate will devote 50% of his or her research, teaching, and service efforts to African American Studies and 50% to the department where he or she will be tenured. While the area of specialization is open, preference will be given to candidates who have a strong interdisciplinary background, especially in the area of Africana or Ethnic Studies, with a research focus on African Americans or the African Diaspora. A teaching load of two courses per semester will usually include the Introduction to African American Studies, as well as upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses.
A Ph.D. by time of appointment (August 2008), and evidence of successful teaching and publication in the subject area of the candidate are required. Mississippi State University is a Ph.D.-granting institution; therefore, an active record of scholarship is essential for promotion and tenure.

Anthropology
The Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work, pending budgetary approval, is seeking applicants for an Assistant Professor, tenure track position in biological anthropology, beginning January or August 2008. PhD in anthropology required at time of appointment. Preference is for a bioarchaeologist with research specialty in native North America. Dedication to scholarship, teaching, and involving undergraduates in research is essential, as is commitment to our Applied Anthropology M.A. program. Department Head
The Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Social Work seeks a Department Head at the rank of Professor, beginning July 1st 2008. Candidates must have a PhD, an established research and extramural funding record, a commitment to academic excellence, and strong administrative skills. Substantive area is open. The successful candidate will join a large multidisciplinary department. Programs offered include BA, MS, and PhD in Sociology, BA and MA in Anthropology, and BSW in Social Work. The department consists of 23 faculty members (16 in Sociology, 7 in Anthropology and Social Work), more than 250 undergraduate majors and more than 50 graduate students. The Department has strong ties to several research centers including the Social Science Research Center, the Cobb Institute of Archaeology and the Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Blindness and Low Vision. Applicants or nominees should have significant publications warranting appointment at the rank of Full Professor with tenure. The Department Head will guide curricular revision and programmatic assessment; encourage strong scholarship; guide junior faculty through the tenure and promotion process; oversee all personnel matters, including the annual review of faculty; manage the budget; cooperate with the College of Arts and Sciences in pursuing research grants and external funding; and serve as a liaison between faculty and administration, providing timely reports to both audiences. Documented experience in departmental or college leadership positions desirable. Teaching assignment is negotiable; the salary will be competitive.
