PhD students Elizabeth Pellegrine and Amanda Gochanour receive grant to conduct statewide needs assessment

Melanie Walsh, Amanda Gochanour, and Elizabeth Pellegrine were recently funded by the LGBTQ Fund of Mississippi under the Community Foundation of Mississippi (formerly the Community Foundation of Greater Jackson) to conduct a statewide needs assessment of Mississippi's sexual and gender minority populations (One year, $8,500). The project is a mixed methods study:  the first wave uses a modified Participatory Action Research model to collect qualitative data about communities, needs, and well-being across the state; the second wave draws on these qualitative data to build a survey instrument to be distributed statewide. To our knowledge, this is the first statewide, academic study of sexual and gender minority populations in Mississippi. Findings from the study will be used to inform the philanthropic work of the LGBTQ Fund of Mississippi and to guide its grantmaking priorities as it supports LGBTQ advocacy work in Mississippi.
