Welcome to Mississippi State. I am delighted to serve as the Head of this thriving department with over 450 undergraduate majors and 50 graduate students. For over 65 years the department has contributed to the university’s land grant mission by educating its students, advancing a scientific understanding of our communities and their problems, and by offering solutions for issues that confront our society. At the undergraduate level we offer degrees in sociology, criminology, and social work. Each of these areas has dedicated faculty who have demonstrated their ability to prepare students for employment in the public and private sectors or for further study in graduate and professional schools. We also have strong ties to the university’s Mississippi Food Insecurity Project, Social Science Research Center, Nsparc, Southern Rural Development Center, Crime and Justice Research Unit, Gender Studies Program, African American Studies Program, and the International Institute.  We are home to the Mississippi Rural and Community Resaerch Lab.

The Carnegie Foundation classifies Mississippi State University as a Very High Research Active University, and our faculty contribute to this ranking. They are nationally and internationally known for their research in the areas of rural sociology, community development, criminology, demography, and social stratification. For the last 50 years, our doctoral program has provided advanced training with over 190 students having earned doctoral degrees. Graduates have gone on to careers in academia, government, non-profits, and other fields.

Please take time to look through these pages to find further information about our faculty, students and programs. We invite you to contact us if we can provide additional information about the department.
